Item Information
GUEST SPEAKER: Colleen Pattingale - Girl Guides Colleen came to Whyalla in 1968 as a teacher at Hinks Avenue Primary School and married Gary who was with the Adelaide Bank. Some moving was then brought on by Garyís postings. Daughters Mignon was born in Whyalla and Alison in Cleve. The girls joined Girl Guides in the Barossa, and so did Colleen as a guide mum and then cook. The girls eventually grew out of it (who didnít wish to become leaders) but not so Colleen. Colleen became involved with Guides in Hawker when they moved there as she could see a need in the area. Locally there are 3 units under the command of Colleen and our own Kerre. The system of training for leaders has changed recently and can be done on the Web and is competency based. The uniform these days is a blue tee-shirt.Modern girls need to be taught how to light a match as itís always been forbidden at home. Last year 43 daughters and fathers went crabbing off the jetty, and 162 trees were planted on arbour day.The main fundraisers for the year are Guide biscuits, collecting cans and bottles and waitressing at other Service Club events. Guides have the Future Leader Program that was run at Stuart High and 350 students attended. Girls on Track Program runs for 6 weeks in both term 1 and term 2. This is for girls at risk - who lack confidence, are bullied or are bullies. They learn friendship, communication, hygiene / grooming, personal safety and cyber safety, dance and healthy eating.
